The Klatawa

In the Chinook language, Klatawa means To Go.  And GO is definitely something this fishing and diving vessel can do! The Klatawa is a 28′, 10’6″ Super-V vessel configured  for shellfish harvesting. She took just 3 months to build; we launched her in Port Angeles Harbor in January ’09.

Talk about a beauty! Powerful and strong, yet she can turn on a dime.

Owned and operated by Dustin Schmitt, an Elwha Klallam Tribal fisherman, the Klatawa is being used in harvesting geoduck clams, sea urchins, crab, and prawns. It has a working payload of 5000 lbs and a top speed of 34 knots. It burns about 5 gallons/hour with twin 150s. It has a 50+ pot capacity. The 4′x8′ cabin has loads of storage space; the huge V-berth has room for the entire crew and all their gear. Of course, it includes a large holding tank to keep the catch safe and sound.

Dustin routinely takes the Klatawa in the Strait of Juan de Fuca, across to Victoria and Vancouver Island, and around the San Juans.

The aluminum construction is both strong and durable, highly maneuverable, and with the lightweight construction, saves a bundle on fuel costs. The hull is specially designed to take a beating in rough water, resulting in a smooth ride when the waves are pounding.
